My second thought was to drop everything - it’s time to go for a ride. The first Corvette arrived on the scene in 1953, the same year I did, so I’m old enough to have seen every model of Corvette actually driving on the road, even if those early year models were few and far between sightings. But every American boy of a certain age grew up with the Corvette being a magical nameplate and the iconic American sports car. Those early ‘Vettes have become highly desirable, and much sought after. I, on the other hand, well – not so much.

I have Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport never owned a Corvette, but I’ve driven every generation of the car. And while I’ve enjoyed some more than others, every minute spent in a Corvette has been special. And after a week with the 2011 Grand Sport Coupe, I can say that this is still an extra-ordinary automobile.

2012 Chevrolet Cruze Hatchback Specifications

All hail the death of the American shitbox. With the 2011 Cruze and 2012 Focus, Chevrolet and Ford have finally delivered compact cars that aren't cheap turds with rental-car interiors.

Certainly Chevy and Ford are tired of losing sales to the more refined Japanese competitors and those sneaky imports from South Korea who trump all comers with an unparalleled feature-per-dollar ratio and worry-free warranties. Today, buyers want their 40 mpg as well as a driving experience and level of quality previously reserved for cars a class or two higher. With a high specification and performance because it has been tested over 4 million miles and in the world’s most extreme climates and with many excellent features, 2012 the Chevrolet Cruze Hatchback is expected would be a serious competitor to the 2011 Toyota Corolla, 2012 Honda Civic and 2012 Ford Focus. They’re all the same size and have similar body styles and features. They all offer good gas mileage and is expected to attract the same demographic of buyers.

Auto Show Appearance
2012 Chevrolet Cruze hatchback was introduced in September at the Paris Auto show. Yet when Subaru unveiled the 2008 STI--the replacement for its legendary, flame-snorting predecessor which launched in the United States in 2004--there was no escaping the feeling that its performance flagship might have lost as much as it gained along the way. And for what?

Yes, the 2008 STI was smoother and quieter. It also felt softer and easier to drive, even--and this was the depressing part--tame in comparison with the original. Some of that feeling was simply perception born from inevitable refinement, but it remained in place to some degree even as Subaru's engineers improved the car's suspension and engine for 2009, with even more suspension upgrades added to last year's STI Special Edition. Unfortunately for the product planners and the early adopters, this is often the case when an inspiring machine evolves, especially one that arrived on the scene providing a driving experience so genuine that it earned a diverse loyalist following spanning traditional gearheads, rally nuts and the sterotypical street-racer fan boys trained on PlayStation more than their local road courses.

Two and a half years later, Subaru does not feel a need to apologize for the last STI, as sales have remained relatively stable at around 3,000 to 3,500 cars sold per year. It does, however, acknowledge “a difference in [company] philosophy when that car was launched,” as one spokesman said on the eve of the 2011 model's introduction. “You can't please everybody.”

No, but first drives of the new WRX and WRX STI indicate that Subaru has come much closer to doing so this time around.

The most obvious distinction is the return of a sedan, which joins the five-door hatchback in the STI lineup. Subaru has always offered a four-door version of the WRX but binned the STI sedan for 2008 because it wanted to sell potential buyers on a direct link between the road car and the hatchback-based World Rally Championship contender of the time. Still, while the five-door's shorter overhangs made it easier for WRC driver Petter Solberg to know where his rally car's corners were, and therefore keep it in one piece at speed through the forests of Wales and the snow banks of Finland, the design failed to resonate with a fair portion of hard-core customers.

“Consumer feedback [said] that a lot of people didn't like the hatch; a lot wanted the sedan,” Subaru's spokesman said. “When we took that away, [some thought the car was] too mild, too mellow.”

There is far less chance of that now, even if you still feel that the latest design lacks the original's raw visual impact and apparent singularity of purpose. The WRX and STI sedans and hatches now share aggressive, wide-body panels. The appearance is all new to Impreza sedans, while revised lightly in the front on five-door versions. To distinguish the STI as the top-of-the-line edition, the sedan once again flaunts a tall signature rear wing, now noticeably convex in sculpting, and all STIs receive bigger wheels and tires and, of course, STI badging.

If you were hoping for increased power, you'll want to skip the following section, as engines and transmissions remain unchanged. The WRX's 2.5-liter turbocharged boxer four still features maximum boost pressure of 14.2 psi and produces 265 hp at 6,000 rpm and 244 lb-ft of torque at 4,000. The STI engine, with 14.7 psi of boost, remains rated at 305 hp at 6,000 rpm and 290-lb-ft at 4,000. Subaru engineers say that the WRX still runs from 0 to 60 mph in 5.4 seconds, the STI in 4.9. Experience shows that Subaru's official acceleration numbers tend to fall into the conservative zone, though; as with the old cars, you should be able to shave 0.2 to 0.3 second from those times. Officially, the WRX tops out at 142 mph, while the STI sedan's improved aerodynamics bump its top speed to 158 mph, 3 mph faster than the hatchback.

Straightline running, though, is not what will make this generation of cars memorable or significant to the lineage, as they feel identical to their predecessors when you crack the throttle in pursuit of pure velocity. And as nice as the wide-body design and mildly reworked interior are (there's a new audio system and instrument cluster, and STIs are now available with leather seats and power moonroof in Limited trim), that's not enough to earn them a new chapter in the Book of Impreza. But what lies underneath just might, as it positively improves the handling with seemingly no reduction in ride quality.

According to Hiroshi Mori, the cars' general manager, “all [mechanical] changes for 2011 [are intended] to improve driver confidence, handling and response.” Initial impressions from a day behind the wheel of the WRX and STI say that he and his team achieved their target.

The key modifications lie within the suspension, which features a wider track (by 1.3 inches in front, 1.5 rear) made possible by the flared bodywork. WRX wheel and tire sizes increase as well, with 17- x 8-inch wheels versus the previous edition's 17 x 7. Tires measure 235/45, up from 225/45. As for the STI, wheel size carries over (18 x 8.5), as does tire size (245/40). The WRX also receives firmer rear suspension subframe bushings, and our brief drive on Colorado mountain roads indicates that there is less body roll through corners to go along with more grip.

Extended time in the STI, though, reveals the real performance story. Mori's engineers fitted the front suspension with a feature well known to racers and aftermarket performance-part junkies. “Pillow ball” bushings—or spherical bearings, if you prefer—attach the aluminum lower control arms to the front suspension's subframe. Whereas the old STI used economical rubber bushings with steel sleeves, the new design's proper steel bearings provide twice as much resistance to fore/aft forces and improve camber and toe stiffness.

From there, it's a trickle-down effect throughout the suspension. Front spring rate increases by 15.6 percent, the rear by an impressive 53 percent over the standard 2010 STI and 18 percent versus the aforementioned STI Special Edition. Antiroll bars are slightly larger (21 millimeters versus 20 in front, 19 versus 18 out back), and the ride height drops by 5 millimeters. Mori says that the STI now generates 0.93 g of maximum lateral grip compared with the 2010's 0.90, and there is 33 percent less body roll. The collective changes and newfound rigidity make better use of the front tires, which previously suffered high wear on the outer third of their tread.

Your backside relays the message better than any numbers on a chart ever could. Our drive on the road indicated improvements in grip, dive, roll and corner turn-in, with the STI taking a quicker, firmer and more confidence-inspiring attitude through corners that will be apparent to drivers of varying skill levels—just as Mori said.

Back-to-back drives in 2010 and 2011 STIs on Aspen Motorsports Park's twisting layout confirmed those feelings. While the 2010 car's tires roared in tortured pain, the 2011's rubber only chirped, even during deliberate attempts to push harder and harder in order to unsettle the chassis, to find the spot when an inherent “softness” emerged as it did in the old car. Such a scenario never happened. Front-end bite is much better, with less understeer and improved grip through all phases of cornering. The new STI appears to handle lateral transitions significantly better than the old, and without doubt, the difference between the two generations was indisputably laid bare.

As this was a first drive, plenty remains to be discovered about the latest WRX and STI. There are many more miles to cover in the real world before we have a definitive sense of whether Subaru has taken a major step toward rediscovering the line's old magic. But if initial impressions prove correct, there's only one thing to say about the previous incarnation.

It's history.

2011 Subaru Impreza WRX

On Sale: Late August/early September

Base Price: $26,220

Drivetrain: 2.5-liter, turbocharged, 265-hp, 244-lb-ft H4; AWD, five-speed manual

Curb Weight: 3,208 lb

0-60 MPH: 5.4 sec (mfr)

Fuel Economy (EPA): 21 mpg

2011 Subaru Impreza WRX STI

On Sale: Late August/early September

Base Price: $34,720

Drivetrain: 2.5-liter, turbocharged, 305-hp, 290-lb-ft H4; AWD, six-speed manual

Curb Weight: 3,384 lb

0-60 MPH: 4.9 sec (mfr)

Fuel Economy (EPA): 19 mpg

Ford SYNC with Applink

Ford SYNC with Applink – Click above to watch the video after the the break

Ford's excellent SYNC infotainment technology is undoubtedly already one of the best systems on the market. But there's clearly been one glaring omission that's been keeping the Microsoft-developed system from attaining its true position as the ultimate automotive killer app that the world has been waiting for: horoscopes.

Good news, all you budding astrologers... Ford has seen fit to add daily horoscopes to all Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles equipped with the cloud-based SYNC app Traffic, Directions & Information (TDI). There's no cost and all the driver needs are an active owner account on www.syncmyride.com and a Bluetooth-enabled cell phone.

Horoscopes not your thing? No problem! There will also be access to stock quotes, movie listings, airlines, rental cars and hotels. LED taillights are also becoming the norm at BMW and the new 3 Series LCI comes to emphasize that.

Exterior:

Regarding the exterior of the car – BMW, like they did with the pre-LCI E92, have managed to make the E92 continue to look much more expensive than it actually is. The facelifted E92 continues to give a strong balance between prestige and performance purely in appearance alone.

Additionally, at front and rear, while the revisions appear minimal, the proof is in the details. At the business end of the 3 Series Coupe, the head lamps have grown slightly with added contours to the bottom line of the head lamp assembly. A thin “eyebrow” can now be found running along the top of each assembly which is lit by LEDs – a design cue taken straight from the E90 LCI, F01 7 Series and F10 5 Series.

Dropping just below the head lamps, the lower bumper is the most heavily modified part of the E92 LCI, losing the struts that flowed with the cut lines of the nose of the car. In its place, BMW have added a slim cut straight across the center of the lower grill, only being broken up by the area just below the larger, wider double kidney grill. Overall, the appearance of the E92 LCI now looks more succinct with the rest of the now more modern BMW line-up.

Moving to the rear of the car, the lower portion of the bumper receives a larger, purposeful crease along the valence just above the exhaust. The L-shaped tail lamps also receive a mild facelift with a more opaque cover to the LEDs when compared to the pre-LCI E92.

Additionally, the pattern of the rear lamp LEDs has two stacked sets of LEDs to provide better visibility at night while also providing a distinctly BMW look. By comparison, the LCI E92 now looks much brighter and contoured over its predecessor.

The side design goes through some changes as well, the E92 LCI features longer overhangs and subtle changes to the side skirts, giving the facelift an overall more aggressive, masculine look.

Read Article

but a bone-stock, 2011 Kia Sorento

Kia's UVO system hands-on – Click above to watch video after the jump

Tucked in between Google's hot new smartphone and a variety of other computer peripheral equipment at this year's CES show is a crossover. Not the jacked-up, tricked-out, neon-dragging customized type that we typically see around the Consumer Electronics Show, but a bone-stock, 2011 Kia Sorento. Well, stock except for one option: UVO.

We recently got a chance to try out the newly-announced system in the plastic, and while impressive in its own right, just hours after sitting down with Ford to check out the latest Sync and MyFord Touch, it's somewhat less than stunning. But, ignoring that for now, Kia's offering looks good and still ahead of the rest of the curve. It's functionally comparable to early Sync, enabling easy access to media on 1GB of internal storage, on a USB-connected drive or even on a CD. You can rip from CD straight to internal memory or to a thumb drive, an interesting feature we're not sure is particularly useful. The touchscreen display is a nice improvement over Ford's two-line Sync readout, but remember that if you get this system, you'll have to opt out of in-dash GPS. Good thing you splurged and got that Droid, right? Check out some screens in the gallery below, and there's a quick video demo after the break.

Kia and Microsoft's UVO

Our spies captured this facelifted C-Class

Subtlety is the key for Mercedes. Our spies captured this facelifted C-Class testing with only a few minor styling updates over the model it replaces. Most noticeable are the re-designed bumper, headlights and wheels.

Despite the similar looks, it's likely that Mercedes will offer a refreshed interior and a host of mechanical updates to improve efficiency and reduce emissions. Among these changes we can expect to see direct fuel injection and a stop-start system, as well as an ultra efficient BlueTec diesel engine.

Reports suggest that there may also be a new C-Class Coupe added to the range, which will replace the smaller CLC.

The facelifted C-Class is likely to be unveiled at the Los Angeles Motor Show in December.

Honda make a road going version of this car

Honda’s new GT race car, the HSV-010 is the center of attention these days because it is the successor of the legendary NSX. Powered by a 3.4-liter V8 developing 500hp, the HSV will be competing in this season of Japanese SuperGT. Of course, it's worth noting that the 2011 A8 faces a price bump due to substantial increases in content and technology, so when the A7 finally comes to the States, the average model is likely to sticker at around $82,000-$83,000, which de Nysschen says is about the price for a typically equipped 2010 A8 (pricing starts at $74,550 plus delivery).

Based on Audi's new longitudinal modular platform technology, the A7 will be clearly related to the A8 (and the A6 replacement that will follow it), and de Nysschen says that the 2009 Detroit Auto Show Sportback concept car serves as a "very reliable indicator" of what the production model will look like. Judging by recent spy shots from our friends at KGP, that very much appears to be the case. While parts commonality will be "substantial," de Nysschen says that the A7 will not use the full aluminum spaceframe design of the A8, although it will have aluminum elements.

As expected, the A8 will launch Stateside in both standard and long-wheelbase formats, with the latter predicted to make up the lion's share of the volume (the A8L presently accounts for about 80 percent of the model's sales).

We asked De Nysschen about how the two models will interact in the full-size luxury sedan segment, and he noted that:

"This top end segment is characterized by more conservative people, and we need to clearly take lower levels of risk with a flagship model [the A8]. But we recognize too that there is a sizable enough cluster of customers in that same segment who are ready for a more avant-garde design [the A7]. So we will essentially be positioning two cars into the same segment, which means that independently, the volume each attains is not that significant, but when you put them together, it will mean that our share of that segment will grow quite dramatically."

All-in De Nysschen thinks that the A8 will account for about 4,000 to 5,000 sales per year in the U.S., and the less costly A7 could clear 7,000-8,000 additional units.

And what of a high-performance S8 to take on Mercedes-Benz's AMG lineup, or the A5 Sportback? It's almost as if the automaker's new executives, amidst apologizing for the company's past and promising to do better in the future, were hoping we'd all fall asleep or get lost in the details. Well, we didn't fall asleep or get lost, and below you'll find a breakdown of what we learned while spending the day hip deep in Chrysler's future product. On the first day of SEMA Steve Saleen and his new company announced Superparts, the aftermarket sales and distribution arm of SMS Supercars. Many of the parts on the 570 Challenger are now available individually, including the SMS 296 supercharger, aerodynamic parts, and suspension, wheel and tire packages.

Also making its debut at the show is the new SMS 296 supercharger for the 2005-2010 Ford Mustang. The system uses many of the same core components from the Challenger kit, but has a few new features specific for the 4.6-liter V8. The most notable feature is the "Duo-Path" induction system that splits the incoming air starting at the throttle body, going around the supercharger housing to the back of the engine where it enters the rear intake of the compressor. Expected power will be in the 475-650 range depending on the package.

Read more on the SMS Superparts announcement after the jump, or opt for the visuals with the '90s-style 2010 Mustang and a 570X Challenger painted in Sour Grape Green in the high-res gallery below.

Honda FF engine demonstrator - click above for high-res image

For 2010, Formula F is getting some fresh blood. The Sports Car Club of America's board of directors has given the thumbs up to Honda's proposal for a new engine in the class. Next year, competitors will be able to swap out their ancient Ford Kent engines for a new 1.5-liter four based on the Fit.

Honda Performance Development created the engine so that it was specifically able to bolt up to many contemporary Formula Ford chassis designs with minimal modification, all while providing comparable performance. The air restrictor and ECU calibrations can be adjusted by HPD to ensure performance parity with the series' existing engines.

The engine's electronically fuel injected engine promises significantly reduced service requirements compared to the Kent, along with better efficiency. The engines will be supplied complete with intake, exhaust and conversion kits. The kit for the Swift DB-1 including the engine and all necessary parts runs $11,750 with deliveries starting February.

Honda Fit FF engine

Win one of five Sony PSP/Gran Turismo bundles - Day 4

It's Day 4 of our SEMA Sweeps! Cruze, and the once-planned replacement for the Chevy Cobalt may be bowing earlier in Europe than it is in the United States, but the new car is expected to help consumers--and General Motors--deal with the wildest market swing in automotive history.

What We Know About the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze

It's no secret that the U.S. vehicle market is undergoing a swift, seismic shift. With unstable gas prices and gloomy economic conditions that seem to get worse by the day, nervous consumers are no longer just deserting big pickups and SUVs, now even thrifty cars and more-economical crossover SUVs aren't selling as well as they had been. It's the biggest market upheaval since the Great Depression.

Automakers everywhere are scrambling to keep up, none more than General Motors. With GM suffering steep sales and revenue declines, the planned replacement for Chevrolet's Cobalt compact car could prove critical to the company's bottom line, and even its overall health. Cruze debuted in the fall of 2008 at the Paris Motor Show, and should go on sale in Europe by March 2009, likely as a 2010 model.

General Motors has announced that North American production of the Chevy Cruze will begin by April of 2010 at GM's plant in Lordstown, Ohio. This time line means Cruze will debut in the U.S. as a 2011 model. The company says Cobalts will continue to be built at Lordstown for a short time after Cruze production starts, and at least one media report suggests Cobalt production could then shift to Mexico. GM says Cruze will also be built at plants in the Asia-Pacific region and Europe.

The 2011 Chevrolet Cruze employs GM's new front-wheel-drive Global Compact Vehicle Architecture, also known as "Delta 2." That makes it a platform-mate of the next-generation Saturn Astra, expected as an early-2010 model, and the Chevrolet Volt that is expected at the end of 2010. Cobalt and the current Astra use the older "Delta 1" architecture. The next-gen Astra for American consumption may be sourced from GM's Lordstown, Ohio, plant as well. At this point, the Astra's production location and the fate of the Cobalt-based Pontiac G5 are unknown.

Sources expect the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze to maintain the Cobalt's general size, but possibly with an inch or two added to wheelbase and maybe overall width. Engineering should be more weight-conscious in light of tough new U.S. fuel-economy mandates and pending new clean-air regulations in California and elsewhere. Look for greater use of lighter materials despite their higher cost, as weight is the enemy of fuel economy and a car's carbon footprint, not to mention performance. Despite the pound-paring, structural rigidity is likely to improve, which should benefit durability, quietness, and perhaps ride and handling, too.

So far, GM has only confirmed a Cruze sedan in base, LS, LT, and LTZ trim levels. But local media reports covering the Cruze press conference at the Lordstown plant said that Ed Peper, GM North America vice president of Chevrolet, described the Cruze sedan as the first of a new family of compact, fuel-efficient Chevrolets. What this means is unknown, but it could point to other vehicles wearing the Cruze badge. Recently the company announced a Chevrolet Orlando concept that is a version of Opel's Zafira. Code named "MPV-7," the small people mover, like the Cruze sedan, is based on the company's "Delta 2" platform and debuted at the Paris show in October 2008. The Cobalt's coupe body style could also be reprised, but with a somewhat edgier, wedgier look than Cobalt.

So far, the company has confirmed two engines for the American version of the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze. The more interesting of the two is a new 1.4-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. The company predicts this optional engine will be rated at 140 horsepower. There is talk that the 1.4-liter turbo's fuel economy could be as high as 45 mpg, presumably on the highway. By contrast, the 2009 Cobalt's base 2.2-liter non-turbo four produces 155 horses and is EPA-rated at 25/37 mpg city/highway in new gas-miser XFE trim. The second engine is a normally aspirated 1.8-liter four that should be good for 138 horsepower. The 1.8-liter unit is likely the same engine that is found in the 2009 Saturn Astra.

The company plans to offer American consumers a 6-speed manual transmission and an optional 6-speed automatic versus Cobalt's 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic. It isn't clear yet if both transmissions will be available with either engine. Gearing will be chosen with an eye to maximizing fuel economy without compromising low-rpm performance. At some point, Chevrolet might add a sporty Cruze akin to the current Cobalt SS, perhaps with the same 260-horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder. The decision will hinge on buyer sentiment and how much higher gas prices go in the next couple of years.

Because it will sell for a short time alongside Cobalt, the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze is likely to be positioned as a more-upscale small Chevy with nicer appointments, more features, and higher prices. The alternative would be to slide Cobalt down-market by eliminating some now-standard equipment. Either way, the new Cruze will likely mimic Cobalt by including standard features like ABS, antiskid system, traction control, curtain side airbags, and GM OnStar assistance, plus 16-inch tires instead of 15s. Options should also broadly duplicate Cobalt offerings, with 17- and maybe 18-inch tires, various cosmetic add-ons, upgraded audio, power sunroof, Bluetooth connectivity, and leather upholstery. A navigation system could well join the list.

In all, the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze stands to be better than today's Cobalt in many ways. It should thus be a more appealing bow-tie alternative to hot-selling, import-brand compacts like the Honda Civic--and now even the elderly Ford Focus. That and the early arrival time show just how serious GM has become about the small-car market. Considering the company's worsening financial condition with the steep drop in sales, the Chevy Cruze won't get here a moment too soon.

The 2011 Chevrolet Cruze will be sold alongside the Cobalt for a short period of time.

A Notable Feature of the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze

Though the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze should be a mostly conventional front-drive small car, we think it may have one or more features designed to maximize mpg. Aside from its smaller new engine and other weight-reducing measures versus Cobalt, the Cruze could conceivably adopt the new low-power lighting, wipers, and audio system being devised for the 2011 Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid compact sedan. This would help GM defray development costs that much sooner, and would also be in line with the Cruze's likely upscale market positioning versus Cobalt. Understand that we can't guarantee any of this right now--but hey, it could happen.

Buying Advice for the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze

The 2011 Chevrolet Cruze enters an already crowded field that's bound to become even more competitive. A fast-growing crop of attractive choices is certainly good news for consumers. The bad news is that certain compacts--the Honda Civic for one--are now in such demand that retailers are again padding prices and forgetting discounts. So, as always, it will pay for you to shop the dealer and the deal, not just the vehicle. But all else being equal, you probably won't go wrong with the Civic. It is, after all, a Consumer Guide Best Buy among compact cars. Then again, so is the Nissan Versa. If neither of those strikes your fancy, consider CG's Recommended compacts, the Hyundai Elantra, Mazda 3, and the winsome but relatively pricey Mini Cooper. The newly redesigned Toyota Corolla is unrated but deserves a look because of who makes it. And don't forget that a redesigned Ford Focus is set to debut in early 2010, though we hear it, too, may be introduced ahead of time. As for the Chevrolet Cruze (and sister Saturn Astra), it could well emerge as a new class star. We'll get back to you on that once we see it a few months from now.

The 2011 Chevrolet Cruze will offer an optional 1.4-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine.

2011 Chevrolet Cruze Release Date: Cruze hits the European market in March 2009, and should be on sale in the United States during the summer of 2010.

2011 Chevrolet Cruze First Test Drive: Media drives could take place in Europe soon after the Paris debut, but formal introduction to American reporters will likely happen just before the car goes on sale here.

2011 Chevrolet Cruze Prices: As noted, the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze is likely to be priced and equipped above comparable Cobalt models, but it's unclear what the differences will be, given today's fast-changing sales picture and the bumpy economy. Our educated guess is that the Cruze will start near $15,500, perhaps a little less, and top out at around $21,000. As usual with new-model intros, Chevrolet probably won't announce final pricing until just before sales begin.

GM releases 2011 Chevy Cruze

Click above for high-res gallery of the 2011 Chevy Cruze

They're here! The first official pics of the 2011 Chevy Cruze have been released by General Motors, and we're not ashamed to say it – we like it. Of course, we're comparing it to the current small car in GM's lineup, the Cobalt, so the bar is pretty low. That said, GM's new small car takes the split-grille motif made famous by the Malibu and makes it more interesting with sharp creases rather than rounded corners. The front end features headlights that extend up and "point" to the A-pillars, and a strong character line running the length of the vehicle sits below a concave bend that sweeps up to meet the windows.

GM claims that fit and finish of the Cruze will be world class for a small car, and that its interior will use "grained surfaces, soft-touch materials and low gloss trim panels" to improve its perceived quality. Unfortunately, no shots of the interior were provided, but you can catch a glimpse in this rear 3/4 shot.

The Cruze will be a global car, and as such it's going on sale in Europe first. It will makes its global debut at the Paris Motor Show in October, where European customers will be the first to check it out in person before it goes on sale in March 2009 overseas. It will be available at launch with a 112-hp 1.6L engine, a 140-hp 1.8L and a 150-hp 2.0L turbodiesel. The North American version will likely get GM's upcoming direct injected 1.4L four-cylinder. The Cruze will also offer a five-speed manual and GM's first application of a six-speed automatic in a small car.

The kicker? The 2011 Chevy Cruze will be built at GM's plant in Lordstown, OH where the current Cobalt and Pontiac G5 are built. Though it'll be built right in our own backyard, the Cruze reportedly won't be available in the U.S. for at least a year or two.

Check out AutoblogGreen's report on the new Cruze to discover its close connection with the Chevy Volt.

Gallery: 2011 Chevy Cruze

[Source: GM]

PRESS RELEASE

All-New Chevrolet Cruze Features Dramatic Design

Detroit - The first photographs of Chevrolet's all-new Cruze sedan - making its world premiere at the Paris Motor Show in October - reveal a dynamic four-door coupe that proves exciting design and value are not mutually exclusive.

On sale beginning in Europe from March next year, Cruze features a dramatic re-interpretation of the traditional sedan featuring Chevrolet's new global design language that is becoming a signature on all new products carrying the gold bowtie.

Cruze's arching roof-line, extending from the steeply raked windshield to its sloping rear pillars and short rear deck, brings coupe-like proportions to a compact sedan.

Wider and longer than most of its competitors, Cruze has a purposeful stance with its wheels located at the outer edges of the tautly drawn bodywork. Noticeably tight body panel fits and a restrained use of exterior trim add to a high quality, 'hewn from solid' appearance.

Cruze's dramatic profile is matched by bold front styling, with large headlamp housings that wrap around the front corners and sweep up, arrow-like, into the fenders and sculpted hood. Other distinct design themes include a concave shoulder line, the two-tier grille and a "wheels-out/body-in" stance. Inside, Cruze features a 'twin cockpit' design motif, first introduced in the iconic Corvette sports car.

"Our goal in designing Cruze was to be bold, not evolutionary," says chief designer Taewan Kim. "We wanted to take a big step forward, making a strong design statement for Chevrolet products around the world."

Visitors to the Paris show will see how Chevrolet's progressive design is also reflected in the quality of Cruze's interior. The use of grained surfaces, soft-touch materials and low gloss trim panels ensures a quality ambience that echoes the clean, harmonious design of the exterior.

At launch in Europe, Cruze will be available with 16-valve, 1.6-liter (112 hp/82 kW) and 1.8-liter (140 hp/103 kW) gasoline engines featuring variable valve timing (VVT) on both inlet and exhaust sides, giving more power as well as better fuel economy and lower emissions. A new 2.0-liter turbo diesel, developing 150 hp/ 110 kW and 320 Nm of torque adds power with even greater frugality. Five-speed manual gearboxes and an all-new automatic transmission, Chevrolet's first six-speed application in the compact segment, complete the powertrain menu.

With sales in Europe up by 23 percent for the first six months of 2008, Chevrolet is GM Europe's fastest-growing mainstream brand. The arrival of Cruze spearheads an exciting new product roll-out program that is expected to propel the brand to even greater success.

"We are proud that Europe is leading the introduction for this global product," said Wayne Brannon, Executive Director, Chevrolet Europe. "Chevrolet has always stood for expressive value and Cruze delivers on that promise like never before. It further redefines Chevrolet with its design, quality, materials and great style inside and out. The fit and finish for gaps and interfaces sets a new standard for this segment in Europe and around the world."

Cruze is the result of a development process harnessing GM's global expertise and is the first of a new family of compact products that will deliver world class quality. It will be backed by expected highest scores in all major crash safety ratings.

The Chevrolet Cruze will be available in Europe from March 2009, followed by other global markets with regional-specific engine choices.

2011 Chevy Cruze

What: A replacement four-door for Chevy's Cobalt

When: Will be sold in Europe starting Spring 2009. Production on the U.S. Cruze should begin April 2010

Price: Unknown. The similar Chevy Cobalt starts at approximately $14,500

The 2011 Chevy Cruze's story is a complex one. Initially meant to replace the fuddy-duddy Chevrolet Cobalt, the Cruze is roughly the same size and holds fives people, just like the Cobalt. But a struggling economy and the memory of astronical fuel costs has caused a renaissance for inexpensive small cars with small engines, and the Cobalt has been given a temporary reprieve. Although the 2011 Chevy Cruze is still in the queue, there are rumors that GM will continue production of its Cobalt for the immediate future.

General Motors, Chevrolet's parent company, has recently declared bankruptcy. While the company says that business should continue as usual, the bankruptcy could add a layer of uncertainty for those interested in purchasing a Cruze when it comes out. However, those who are able to stomach the uncertainty may be able to get a great deal on a new Chevrolet. Check out What GM's Bankruptcy Means for You to answer any questions you have before buying.

The new Cruze is a front-wheel drive vehicle to be built on the new Delta 2 platform. It has a confirmed 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with direct fuel injection, and reportedly makes 140 horsepower and 130 pound feet of torque. Writers also speculate the Cruze could achieve 40 mpg on the highway.

What the Auto Press Says

As the months progress, more information has become available about the upcoming Cruze. Whereas the design, features and release date were previously very hush-hush, Chevy's website now reports production will begin April 2010. Still, test drives with any Cruze -- from either side of the pond -- are few. A Motor Trend journalist had the opportunity to test-drive a Euro-spec Cruze, only to leave with conflicting impressions of coarse engines but tidy handling. Luckily, GM has promised a different engine for the U.S. market. Auto writers, however, eagerly anticipate the Cruze's high fuel numbers.

Here is what the press has to say about the coming 2011 Chevy Cruze:

"Amid the financial mess that has become General Motors, we're told that the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze is coming our way, one more piece of GM's constantly improving product portfolio. Despite GM's financial drama, the Cruze refuses to get sidetracked." -- Edmunds

"If GM can pull off that mileage, it will surpass the standard gas, non-hybrid offerings on the market today from Honda and Toyota -- Fit and Yaris." -- BusinessWeek

"Born from Chevy's global design and engineering team, the Cruze will sport many of the exterior elements we've seen on recent concepts, so expect lots of angular lines, a high belt-line and a squat greenhouse." -- Autoblog

+ "Look for greater use of lighter materials despite their higher cost, as weight is the enemy of fuel economy and a car's carbon footprint, not to mention performance." -- Consumer Guide

During the first published test drive of the European Cruze, Motor Trend notes, "You can certainly feel the solidity of the body, as it traverses rough surfaces with nary a shake, and less audible clang than in most of the Japanese rivals. This despite the reasonably firm spring settings in the European-spec version. The firmish springs make the ride a bit lively over rough roads, but the damping is well-judged provided you limit your speed. Which you probably will." -- Motor Trend

Key Details

GM has confirmed the 2011 Cruze's name, but additional details are few.

Stay tuned for more details on the 2011 Chevy Cruze.

new 2011 Chevrolet Cruze

GM claims that fit and finish of the Cruze will be world class for a small car, and that its interior will use “grained surfaces, soft-touch materials and low gloss trim panels” to improve its perceived quality. The muscle car in the window may bring you into the dealership, but you're more likely to walk out with something more practical. Say, a Cruze, for example.

That's what happened with one customer in China, where the price of an imported Camaro is, according to one report at least, the equivalent of a whopping $200,000. Having apparently geeked out like the rest of us at Michael Bay's blockbuster hit Transformers, the customer looks to have fallen in love with Bumblebee like that little punk Shia LeBeouf with Megan Fox (who really should be with a certain blogger whose name starts with an "N" and ends with an "oah"), but...where were we? Oh yeah, the Chinese fan gave his Chevy Cruze the full Bumblebee treatment, which looks to have involved a bit more than just plastering on some racing stripes. Check it out in the gallery below.

Gallery: Chevrolet Cruze with Bumblebee treatment

[Source: China Car Times I Images: Club.Sohu.com]
Tags: bumblebee, camaro, chevrolet, chevrolet bumblebee, chevrolet camaro, chevrolet cruze, ChevroletBumblebee, ChevroletCamaro, ChevroletCruze, chevy, chevy bumblebee, chevy camaro, chevy cruze, ChevyBumblebee, ChevyCamaro, ChevyCruze, Megan Fox, MeganFox, Michael Bay, MichaelBay, Shia Labeouf, ShiaLabeouf, transformers

Chevy Cruze Will Give Small-Car Buyers

During a live chat session last week on the GM FastLane blog, CEO Fritz Henderson answered questions from the media, analysts and customers.Read Article

However, he was unable to answer every question due to time constraints - one that had to deal with GM’s most significant small car, the Chevrolet Cruze.
To make sure that Fritz provided his input on the Cruze, FastLane just posted a follow-up from the big boss at GM. We are, after all, a generation on the rise. The surprising part about Brian Deese's story is that he's been instrumental in shaping the Obama administration's moves to save General Motors, and this is his first official tour of duty in Washington. What qualifies a guy who hasn't even finished his Yale Law degree to steer President's automotive task force around? From what's been said about Mr. Deese, his quick ability to boil down the often competing economic and political aspects of any given issue.

Deese piped up in favor of Fiat's rescue of Chrysler, pointing out with a memo that a fire sale of the ailing automaker would send unforseen ripples out into the economy as a whole. Speaking out in such an influential manner is definitely unusual considering Deese doesn't appear to be an auto enthusiast or business propeller-head with his nose buried in studies and reports about the car industry. A childhood spent in the Boston suburb of Belmont, Massachusetts under the parentage of a college professor an an engineer, Deese did his undergraduate time at Middlebury College in Vermont before heading to Washington to work for Nancy Birdsall on international aid. A turn with former Clinton policy wonk Gene Sperling before the move to Yale, Hillary Clinton's bid for nomination brought Deese back to DC. With friends in Washington, Deese found himself hooked into the Obama team, and from there he's been running busily around our nation's capital.

If General Motors can successfully navigate Chapter 11, we'll all get to see just how well Brian Deese has done digesting the thorny chestnut that is saving our domestic auto industry.

New Chevy Cruze

Governmental representatives including Ohio Governor Ted Strickland, Senator Tim Ryan, and numerous others gathered today for the first (purposeful) unveiling of the Chevy Cruze by GM Chairman and CEO Rick Wagoner. Presumably it will allow General Motors to overpass the current financial crisis and sky-rocket it into the top where it once was.

The Chevy Cruze car has been announced with two engine models, and the most interesting of the two is the 1.4 liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine clocked at about 140 horsepower. The second engine is a normally aspirated 1.8-liter four that should be good for 138 horsepower. The 1.8-liter unit is likely the same engine that is found in the 2009 Saturn Astra.

As suspected, the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze is more likely to be labeled as a more upscale small Chevy with more features, higher prices and better specs than it’s predecessor the Chevrolet Cobalt. The available options should also mimic the ones of the Cobalt, including 17 or 18-inch tires, various cosmetic add-ons, upgraded audio, power sunroof, Blue-tooth connectivity, and leather upholstery. A navigation system could well join the list.

The 2011 Chevrolet Cruze concept car

In all, the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze stands to be better than today’s Cobalt in many ways. It should thus be a more appealing bow-tie alternative. According to rumours we might also get a Chevy Cruze Coupe version.

Chevy Cruze Release guide

2011 Chevrolet Cruze Release Date: Cruze hits the European market in March 2009, and should be on sale in the United States during the summer of 2010.

2011 Chevrolet Cruze First Test Drive: Media drives could take place in Europe soon after the Paris debut, but formal introduction to American reporters will likely happen just before the car goes on sale here.

2011 Chevrolet Cruze Prices: As noted, the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze is likely to be priced and equipped above comparable Cobalt models, but it’s unclear what the differences will be, given today’s fast-changing sales picture and the bumpy economy. Our educated guess is that the Cruze will start near $15,500, perhaps a little less, and top out at around $21,000. As usual with new-model intros, Chevrolet probably won’t announce final pricing until just before sales begin.

First official images of 2011 Chevrolet Cruze

General Motors have been released the first official images of the new 2011 Chevrolet Cruze.

GM claims that fit and finish of the Cruze will be world class for a small car, and that its interior will use “grained surfaces, soft-touch materials and low gloss trim panels” to improve its perceived quality. The Cruze will also offer a five-speed manual and GM’s first application of a six-speed automatic in a small car.

UPDATED: new photo from 2011 Chevy Cruze presentation:

Chevy Cruze

What: A replacement four-door for Chevy's Cobalt

When: Will be sold in Europe starting Spring 2009. Production on the U.S. Cruze should begin April 2010

Price: Unknown. The similar Chevy Cobalt starts at approximately $14,500

Preview

Photo Gallery

New for 2011

The 2011 Chevy Cruze's story is a complex one. Initially meant to replace the fuddy-duddy Chevrolet Cobalt, the Cruze is roughly the same size and holds fives people, just like the Cobalt. But a struggling economy and the memory of astronical fuel costs has caused a renaissance for inexpensive small cars with small engines, and the Cobalt has been given a temporary reprieve. Although the 2011 Chevy Cruze is still in the queue, there are rumors that GM will continue production of its Cobalt for the immediate future. And even though General Motors has plans to reorganize several of its brands as a condition of the auto bailout, the soon-to-come Cruze is still slated to appear on U.S. lots in the future.

Key Details

GM just confirmed the 2011 Cruze's name, though they haven't been very forthcoming with additional details. At an expectations-management conference, GM CEO Bob Lutz did confirm the turbo engine, its high mpg, and its 2011 birthdate.

Stay tuned for more details on the 2011 Chevy Cruze.

Chevrolet Cruze: Photo update

Although General Motors released exterior pictures of the 2010 Chevrolet Cruze in August, we’ve had to rely on spy shots for a glimpse of the interior — until now. The automaker today released two interior photos to coincide with the car’s unveiling at the Paris Motor Show this week.

One surprising tidbit is that the Cruze appears to buck Chevy’s current twin-cockpit trend, as seen on the new Malibu and Traverse.

Outside, the Cruze takes styling cues from the new Malibu, and promises to be a much sharper car than the current Cobalt. Chief designer Taewan Kim says that the new Cruze’s design is meant to be “bold, not evolutionary. We wanted to take a big step forward, making a strong design statement for Chevrolet products around the world.”

The car will hit the European market in March of 2009, with U.S. production at the Lordstown, Ohio, plant, where the Cobalt is currently made, beginning in June 2010.

Although there is widespread speculation that the Cruze will eventually replace the Cobalt, it still remains possible that both cars could coexist within GM’s lineup. In fact, Chevrolet’s North American head, Ed Peper, says the Cruze is actually intended to create a new segment that slots above the Cobalt but below the Malibu. Seeing the car in person confirms the Cruze could fill that hole in Chevy’s lineup as it is actually bigger than it looks in pictures.

At its European launch, the Cruze will offer a 16-valve, 1.6-liter four-cylinder with 112 horsepower and a 140 horse 1.8 liter. Both gasoline engines will feature variable valve timing on both the inlet and exhaust sides. Also available for Europe, though not expected in the United States, is a 2.0 liter turbo diesel putting out 150 horsepower and 320 Nm of torque (official lb-ft. figures weren’t released, but we’d expect approximately 235 lb-ft). Transmission choices will include a five-speed manual or a six-speed automatic.

Based on what was once called the Delta 2 platform, the all-new Cruze will ride on GM’s Global Compact Vehicle Architecture. The primary engineering and development will come from GMDAT — General Motor’s Korean partner (although there has been strong input from the North American and European planning groups).

Codenamed GMX071, the Cruze shares many components as well as styling features with the next Daewoo Lacetti, including a large portion of sheetmetal.

Obviously Chevrolet’s Cruze and the Daewoo Lacetti will not be completely identical, as each will have different styling cues on the front and rear clips, headlamps and taillights.

Chevrolet will also offer another version for markets outside of the United States, known as the Optra. In addition to these, there will likely be up to 15 different cars for GM’s global markets based on this new “Global Delta” architecture.

Chevrolet Cruze meets an eager Europe 2010

Click above for high-res gallery of the Chevy Cruze LT

The Chevrolet Cruze is three kinds of car: small, American and important. And with the state of General Motors, it isn't even the individual words that mean the most: it's whether The General can combine them into a reliable, fuel efficient and cost effective package. True, we don't get to drive these things while they're parked under the lights, but to have a seat in the Cruze is to imagine a GM that begs the question, "Where was all this before the meltdown?" The studio imagery we've seen so far translates nicely into real life, and the center console looks and feels substantial – in fact, it looks like it could be foreign – even if the silver mesh treatment in the show car was a bit much. The car has a compact yet full-bodied stance, and will probably look even better on the road in a color other than scarlet, and not under klieg lights. Spring of '09 will welcome this first Cruze variant to Europe, after which other regions will get it, as well as a probable hatchback and wagon. It will be powered by a 1.4-liter turbo four-cylinder that charts up to 140 hp and is said to return 40 mpg. Have a look at the high-res gallery of live shots below to get a better idea of what to expect when the Cruze goes on sale here in a couple years.

GM releases official News pics of 2011 Chevy Cruze

Chevy Cruze LT LIVE
